Marvel Comics #1 from 1939 introduced the world to the Sub-Mariner! It also has a few strange moments…

Out of context this does feel like a head scratcher at first, but the Sub-Mariner was originally conceived of as a POC, he’s half-human, half-Atlantean. Oddly enough, most comic readers today may not even realize that the character was never intended to be white, which might be because some of his depictions over the years haven’t been the most PC (with over-exaggerated ‘Asian’ features), and Marvel probably didn’t want to draw attention to that.

The good news is, it looks like the MCU is going for sort of an Aztec vibe with the Atlantean culture in ‘Wakanda Forever’, and will most likely handle that aspect of the character better than the Golden Age comics, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how the Sub Mariner is handled on the big screen (played by Tenoch Huerta) later this month with the release of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”!
